Why I Have Chosen To Become a Medical Doctor
On 29th October, 1996, I visited a general hospital with my mum. That was my first time being in a hospital since I started reasoning like a human. When we got to the hospital, my mum went into the consulting room to meet the doctor, then I took the opportunity to explore the hospital while their conversation continued.
I curiously went into the wards.I had always heard my parents talk about how patients moan and scream while receiving treatments.I also learnt that people with different sicknesses visit the hospital. This was why I was curious to explore it all.
To my surprise, I found myself in the orthopaedic section of the hospital. What I saw did not give me mouth to talk.I saw patients whose inner bones can be seen with naked eyes.I saw what gave me the highest shock of my life.I would had thought they were skeletons if not for the fact that they were breathing ceaselessly and talking in rather effusive ways. You can easily tell that they were suffering excruciating pains.I saw little kids like I was then. They were many and sounded abandoned. The way the nurses were talking to them would tell you undoubtedly that they are not being cared for.Perhaps because the good samaritans who brought them to the hosital had abandoned them and their respective families seems to be less caring.I could feel the agony they were passing through and wished that such would never cross my family.
I could vividly remember the very year my father died.It is a sad story that I cannot really forget. That was when I finally made up my mind that I will end up as a medical doctor. My father suffered High Blood Pressure with kidney failure. We moved from door to door looking for help from people. It was as though the entire world had come against us.We did struggle the much we could to give him back his life but all effort proved abortive. This was because we lacked the financial medical care he needed.Ever since then, I promised myself that I must become a medical doctor to salvage not just my family, but every family who lackef financial support from inadequate medical attention, especially kids.
